Can anyone explain this on seeking?

Ok odd situation. I get an email saying someone, let's say username123, sent me "a reply". I do not recall seeing their profile before. When I click on the "view message" option in the email, it opens my inbox with a message "Unable to open the message as the user is no longer active." However if I click on the picture of the person in the email, it takes me to their profile, which is in fact active. But there is no message from them or any conversation.
Can anyone make sense of this?
