Ok, so, as several theories so far have stated, the Diamonds must have used some kind of weapon on the Earth to corrupt any remaining Gems on the planet. As we saw in Centi's drawing (yes, until she gets a name, I am calling her Centi) as well as Lapis' flashback in Same Old World, it came from he sky.

Remember that weird floating object in the moon base? The one they noticed but didn't interact with....I think THAT was, or was at least a part, of the weapon used on Earth.

I feel like this is why they will be going "Back To The Moon". To investigate that object.
