The the upcoming Discovery on it's way I'm intrigued as to why it isn't set in the future. Everything after the Next Generation Era has been set in the past (I'm lumping DS9 and Voyager into this 'Era').
Why not look forward and set it into to the 26th or 27th century?
Captain Picard disagrees with Commander Riker regarding their 20th Century passengers in the episode 'The Neutral Zone'. He alludes to this school of thought by saying, "That would take us in the wrong direction. Our mission is to go forward - and it's just begun."
I'm not sure Gene Roddenberry would would have done this. I'd like to think he'd want to look forward and only progress could be considered Star Trek.
This is just my $0.02. I would really like to see, someday, a Star Trek hundreds of years after the end of the Next Gen Era.
