Experience with snoring while awake

My partner is a horrible snorer. At night it's a race who falls asleep first. If I do, I usually get through the night. If he does, it's too much for my earplugs so I usually just move to the sofa.
The weird thing is, when I do, he often asks me if I'm moving because of his snoring. The answer usually surprises him as he feels like he's wide awake yet he does not hear the sound he's making.
Does anyone have experience with this?
