If people have their money to scientific research instead of luxury status symbols

If instead of a big house, nice car, nice vacations, fancy furniture, concert tickets, and expensive operations to prolong our aging dog’s lives, what if we just stayed home and gave that money to scientific research? Wouldn’t that be a better investment in ourselves?

I'm thinking this every day. If super rich would not spend their money buying super expensive cars, houses and so on but would instead put that into scientific research, then we would be much closer to curing any disease and AGI
