Shostakovich's 5th symphony is held in such high regard, but I struggle to appreciate it as much as many of his other works. Especially after becoming so well acquainted with his 4th before listening to the 5th, it doesn't seem nearly as powerful to me.
People say the ending is very strong, but I feel as if it just doesn't compare to the depressingly impactful ending of the fourth. It just feels as if it were a step backward he was forced into by the party. I suppose I feel guilty for not enjoying such a monumental piece in his history.
I want to be able to enjoy the 5th symphony as much as other people and am looking for advice on how to go about that. What parts are the most interesting to you and make you love the piece?
