I am SO spoiled by AoS. I'm not saying the show doesn't sometimes have bad writing, or characters that seem to change their motivations or moments of comic book absurdity BUT
. . . maybe I'm just spoiled in that the writers are still taking their show very seriously and putting in a real effort to deliver a consistent universe that makes sense within the context of it's established lore and populated with characters who seem like real people. Please keep it up. Moar like this!
<marvel fan boy rant> Comparatively, it's painful to watch the DC shows, even as they have their fun moments.
Every little plot hole and inconsistency and the campy, tropeyness that's endemic to Flash and Legends and has crept into Arrow Felicity and Friends now just grates on me while I'm watching and kicks me right in the suspension of disbelief and reminds me that I'm watching actors who have studied martial arts, who are reciting lines on a set and not actual super heroes.
I just watched their big three part cross over extravaganza and it was SO bad. It was FUN, but it was SO silly. I sometimes feel like DC's shows are just a big running joke about the ridiculousness of the whole super hero genera and they're not even TRYING to be anything different. The characters' reactions to situations are often one dimensional, not believable and clearly written in clumsily as a pretense for having dramatic tension between two particular characters that can be neatly resolved later ("Oh, Oliver's gonna be a jerk to Super Girl in a totally stupid way, just so she can save his life later and they can become friends. . . because after magic and metahumans, we don't think Ollie can handle a Kryptonian? For emotional reasons?" "Oh, Cisco needed to learn a personal lesson about the consequences of Time Travel, so he could be friends with Barry again." I'm actually kinda glad Constantine got cancelled, because it would have been painful to watch John get sucked into the Soap Opera/SitCom circle jerk that DCTV has turned into. How many seasons before they tried to hook him up with Felicity so that he could have contrived social drama with Oliver just before some big bad breaks out of hell and time travels back to 1972 and kills Professor Stein's wife?
And the technobabble has crossed some NEW line that I'm not sure existed before in television. Like:
--Firefly technobabble-----Star Trek technobabble------Stargate technobable----------------------|--DCTV
As someone who works in tech and used to work in STEM education, this is especially cringeworthy. (I contrast this to AoS where early this season we heard the line "It's a myth that we only use 10 percent of our brains. . . " I applauded.)
I also feel like Rational Man With a Shot Gun could destroy or take over the DC TV multiverse in like 27 different really obvious ways. I think the MCU, TV parts included would be a much tougher nut for him to crack, even WITH GotG in the mix. And I appreciate that. </rant>
TL;DR: I love AoS. TV execs, make more comic book shows like THIS and LESS like DC.
EDIT: Felicity mumbling "DarmokandJaladatTanagra" after time traveling DIDN'T make me like her more. . .
EDIT 2: I will also say the DC TVverse ensemble cast seems to be having a GREAT time! You can really tell they all enjoy what they're doing. That's good, I'm glad for them.
