Looking for books to read to help design realistic scientifically based superheroes

I am trying to design a realistic and scientifically based superheroes and superhero world, with all sorts of origins of technology, ancient artifacts that ended up studied (a la the Ark of the Covenant in Indiana Jones, except actually studied), genetic anomalies, etc. Are there books that talk about realistic ideas for superheroes or superhero-esque worlds?
