Battens vs. None?
Post Body

What is r/sailings view of full batten mainsails? With all of their flaws (batten pockets needing repair, more cumbersome, catching on lazyjacks, etc.), are they worth it? I am 85% convinced they are. Help me make the call. Thanks

UPDATE: I went with a full batten main. I am going to try it without a sailtrack. Three sets of reefs in 8oz Challenge cloth, low friction slides with integrated "wheels". Slight increase in sail area 4% due to the added roach. I had the batten receptacles installed with 10mm threads to be compatible with many track systems if I need to go that route later. Webbed on hardware, triple stitched with alternating colors in the stitching to show wear, additional reinforcement around tension areas, and leather covering areas where we could have chafe or UV problems later. Now I will spend the next month waiting, worried that it won't fit, but excited and ready to fly it.

Update II: It fits. The wheeled hardware is 'okay' but most definitely is not a dedicated track. I very well may end up with a Strong Track. The sail worked out well and fits the boat fine. Looking at it now, I could have added more than the 5" I did to the foot. Oh well. The stack height with the new luff hardware outsizes our sailcover and we are going to have to work around that issue. Overall I am happy with the sail, I do wonder still if I am going to need a track, but I need to sailkote the slides, and clean up the track before I make the big call. I think it'll be worth it.
