So the vast area needing patrols seems to be an issue for the international forces patrolling the gulf of Aden. So why not reduce the area monitored to just a single track of Radar AIS stations, and require that boats entering the track have a filed float plan and AIS. I know that currently everyone turns off their radios when they go into this area, but if there was the threat of being sunk if you entered the zone without authorization and the track was patrolled I think it could work. Is this complete fantasy? We are talking about a lot of area here, and also talking about broadcasting a boat's location out to the rest of the world, but at the same time the worlds Navies would only patrol one track (easier than the entire area), and permanent monitoring stations could be set up out at sea so that air support could come to a boat's rescue if an unauthorized boat entered the zone. Add to this a zero tolerance policy of sinking boats that enter the zone without a float plan and AIS and it could potentially make things safer no? Too big a project? What do you guys think? It would up the stakes for piracy, so long as boats were actually sunk that violated the zone's restrictions.
