Looking at a used S10 today, first truck...have questions

Basically what should I be looking for other than general used car stuff, the vehicle is a single owner '99 S10 2.2 manual with just over 100k miles for $3800.

Guy has all of the maintenance paperwork and the truck looks to be in good shape, I'm test driving it today and will run the VIN to get vehicle history stuff.

I'm torn between it and an '08 Ranger with 50k more miles from a dealer for about $6k.

Use case would be weekend trips to backpacking trailheads, fishing trips, home depot runs...not a daily driver.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
