Main St Lines after Paving

When I drove to work today they had painted the double solids. But it was like something out of /r/NotMyJob. In places, they skew out elliptically into the east bound lanes. For roughly 4 blocks, west bound it about 2.5 lanes wide, and east is 1.5. While this may help in the morning, it's going to blow up the already narrow afternoon commute. Anyone know if there's a method to the madness, or is it just par for the course for RVA?
