My friend is recruiting for new flatmates. He asked me if I had any questions for them (“just know that I will ask them this no matter how intrusive or inappropriate. think carefully.”) and after tossing up some sort of intrepid investigation of their awareness of mimetic desire (“why do you want?”) and deciding it was too nuanced for an interview of a probably tired, disinclined househunter, I settled on asking a matter of personal concern, “would you rather be a meteor, or a snail?”
Meteors are fast, bright and a show for others. Snails are small, slow, weird and slimy, but undeniably alive. Would you give up your life for others to see something magical?
Potential flattie answered snail. My friend wasn’t bothered but he didn’t find out WHY so I just assumed it was an undignified impulse toward sentience and became swiftly disenchanted.
This is so annoying of you, I wouldn't want to live w you or probably know you ever
