Novel Psychedelic Mescaline Analog 2-Bromo-3,4,5-trimethoxyamphetamine (2-Br-TMA, BTMA); A Collection of Bioassays

INTRODUCTION: Some of you may recognize this post from The Vespiary, I’m posting it here just to spread the information on this novel compound as much as possible.

The following is a small collection of reports detailing my personal experience with gradually increasing doses of the novel, likely completely unexplored compound 2-Br-TMA—which has now taken on the short hand name “BTMA” in my notes. With the help of some other recklessness participants, the doses were titrated up starting at 200ug. Having multiple people alternating doses so that on any given day one of us was running an experiment ensured we’d avoid building tolerance while simultaneously finding the active dose as quickly as possible.

RELEVANT INFORMATION:

  • Weight: 800 newtons, 180 lbs
  • Mass: 80 kg
  • Relevant drugs I am familiar with: Not worth listing. A lot of them.

  • During all experiments no other psychoactive drugs (including caffeine, nicotine, etc) were ingested.

  • The BTMA used during these experiments was synthesized by myself and characterized by NMR.

  • All dose amounts are reported as the mass of the HCl salt.

DOSAGE: 40-80 mg.

DURATION: 7-9 h.

QUALITATIVE COMMENTS: (with 20mg) Nothing that could be differentiated from placebo.

(with 40mg) Mild effects were apparent at T 1:20 which intensified up until T 3:30 or so. No negative body sensations, mild body high, slight visuals on textured surfaces as well as with eyes closed, increased desire to socialize. My head was clear and there seemed to be no loss of coordination. Any higher of a dose I would not have been comfortable driving, though. Despite trying, sleep was not achieved until T 9:00 at 2:30 in the morning. Overall this dose was similar in intensity to 10-12mg of 2C-B or 40-50ug of LSD, and qualitatively the effect profile was closer to 2C-B.

(with 60mg) The first subtle alerts were noticed at T 0:30, which had developed into psychedelia by T 1:30. The way this compound creeps up on me reminds me of mescaline. By T 2:00 getting my thoughts down in my notes felt difficult.

The intensity seemed to plateau by T 3:30. During the peak, time appeared to pass quite slowly. Once again there was no nausea and minimal to no negative body load. To my surprise, BTMA is quite a comfortable substance. Playing guitar during the peak was wonderful and certain notes combined with the vibration of the guitar would send enjoyable “waves” through my body. It felt as though I was playing better than I usually do, specific transitions between chords that I normally struggle with felt smoother and faster. But, in contrast, I was noticeably uncoordinated while walking around.

Textures would immediately begin to flow and morph when I looked at them. The closed eye visuals were colourful and somewhat complex during the peak, though not incredibly intense. They reminded me most of those brought on by ETH-LAD. Thoughts were relatively clear and linear. No thought loops. The compound seemed to encourage philosophical and introspective thinking—mostly in relation to my emotional state and how I treat myself. But feelings of interconnectedness or spiritual understanding of the universe were not present.

By T 4:40 I was coming down while going for a walk. The comedown is quite slow and relaxing. Sometimes when I’d blink I would notice my eyes wiggle back and forth involuntarily for a moment. Tracers were quite apparent. It was an odd combination of effects.

At T 8:20 proper sleep was not an option. I couldn’t tell if I was just laying in bed awake with a completely empty mind or having moments of sleep and then waking up. Very odd feeling, but not uncomfortable.

By T 9:00 the psychedelia was completely gone but the physical stimulation persisted in the form of restless legs until T 12:00.

The next day I woke up with a slight headache. I figured this was unrelated, attributing it at first to dehydration. But I was informed multiple people have experienced headaches after tripping on 2-Br-Mescaline, so it’s probably worth mentioning here. I have not tried the 2-Br-Mescaline yet but will be watching out for headaches when I do so.

EXTENSIONS AND COMMENTARY: There exists only one mention that I can find on 2-Br-TMA in the literature. It comes from the book “Phenethylamine: Von der Struktur zur Funktion” by Daniel Trachsel. A single sentence on page 907, translated to English, reads “The 2-bromo analogue 2-BR-TMA appears to be only slightly weaker in humans than TMA, and it is also more active in changing visual perception, and fewer physical side effects have been observed.” and lists the dose at ~200mg, referencing a “personal communication with P. Rausch” in 2009 as the source of this information. I’m not sure who P. Rausch is, but this claim doesn’t seem to be entirely accurate. I agree that BTMA has less body load and is more visual but it is evident from my experiences that BTMA is more potent than TMA by a substantial margin.

In a separate experiment, 42mg of TMA HCl produced only a sense of restlessness, nausea, and minor physical effects that were not entirely comfortable. For a moment there may have been some closed eye visuals but they were very subtle. I was in a playful mood during conversation, enjoying jokes more than usual. But it’s hard to say if that was just my mood at the time or an effect of the drug. Overall it appears 40mg of BTMA HCl is noticeably more potent than a freebase equivalent dose of its parent compound; TMA.

60mg of BTMA HCl (54mg of freebase) induced a psychedelic experience more intense than 325mg of mescaline HCl (277mg of freebase), where as 40mg of BTMA HCl (36mg of freebase) induced a less psychedelic state. It is reasonable to conclude BTMA is between 4 to 8 times as potent as mescaline. If I were to guess I would say it’s likely around 6 times the potency. It will be exciting to explore 2-Br-Mescaline (BM) and compare the potency to its amphetamine analog. Will the pattern of psychedelic amphetamines being more potent than their phenethylamine sisters remain consistent? Based on previous reports on BM’s potency it looks to be a close call. If it turns out that BM is more potent than BTMA that would pose some interesting questions about the SAR of these compounds.

As enjoyable and promising as BTMA is, I will likely not be the one to take it any further. I’m too busy and am more interested in synthesizing new compounds. I’m excited to see a trip report from one daring enough to synthesize and take it up to a high dose—possibly 70-80mg. An all around lovely experience awaits for that adventurer, I’m sure.
