How can someone show they can be trusted?

I believe you can trust a person from the start. Especially if you don't have a reason not to. That trust pretty much belongs to the person who is giving it. It's up to the other person to not do anything to break it. When it is broken, how can the person who did that show it won't happen again and that they can be fully trusted? The only answer that I can come up with is setting them up to see if he or she would do the right thing. Other than that, I think it's just a gut feeling.
