So I’m gonna lead with why I think this. We met in 2019 by pure chance. He was very into me but was completely broke (I was 20 at the time and was also broke so this didn’t bother me). He told me that he’d been robbed by former friends and had a house fire, which seemed plausible (house fires are common in NYC). After we’d been hanging out a few weeks, I asked him what his last name was. He responded by saying, “That’s an odd question.” He then told me that the first name he said he had was not actually his first name; rather, it was the name of his brother, who was “unfortunately aborted.” He told me he had a stalker and started going by this name to avoid his stalker. This made very little sense to me and I noped out.
I reconnected with him in 2020 because I was young and stupid. He told me he was either in NYU or had gone to NYU (I don’t remember which). He was studying nursing there. I had a weird feeling about this and my mom also suspected he was lying, but we couldn’t really explain why. It was more of a vibe than anything else.
Flash forward to 2024. I went through a break up and reconnected with him on a strictly sneaky link basis. He seems pretty cool and normal at first but has said a couple stuff that doesn’t seem to line up and I don’t know if I’m being too suspicious or what.
Here’s a list: 1. He lived in Puerto Rico for a year. He has shown me pictures of him there and has a stray dog he adopted there. I believe this. But he told me that he lived in a mansion with his rich friends and they ate wagyu steak every day. I don’t understand why rich people would unofficially adopt this random grown ass man unless it was a sex thing, but he said they wanted to mentor him in crypto.
Which leads me to my next thing. He’s super into crypto. In 2024. He says he made a lot of money off it, spent it all, and then made another 312k dollars. He won’t let himself touch this money but I think I remember he said it was in some kind of savings account. This would make sense (I think?) but he lives in Washington Heights with a roommate. No disrespect to Washington Heights or roommates (Washington Heights is a nice area and I lived with my sister until recently in my grandpa’s old apartment, and before that lived with 4 roommates), but not a lot of 30 year olds who have 312k in savings live there or have roommates. Not only that, he hates his roommate. If i had 312k you couldn’t tell me shit. Why would you voluntarily live with someone you hate?
He also claims to have made 10k a month on Twitch at one point. I dont know what happened to that. He said it was with his ex girlfriend.
He just got fired from his restaurant job. This happens but he described selling stuff on TikTok shop and being on the job interview circuit again (he seems to have worked a string of jobs like this) and things like that and I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t try to build a career at his big age. Which leads me to my next point….
To me his educational history makes no sense. I don’t know if that’s just me though, or if things were different when he was in school. For reference, he’s 30, so he would have been in high school from about 2008 to about 2012 (ish, this stuff can take different periods of time for different people). Here are some things that don’t seem to add up…
a. He told me that he went to high school in The Bronx. I asked him where. He paused for a while and said “Jackson Heights,” which is in fucking QUEENS. I told him, “that’s in Queens.” He was like “yeah but my family lived in the Bronx.” This sometimes happens so I asked him where and he said West Farms. I was like, alright, makes sense.
b. He told me that he went to NYU for “a few months,” but transferred to Bronx Community College because of cost reasons. He studied nursing there and says he has a Bachelors of Science. This makes NO SENSE. I’ve never heard of someone transferring from NYU to BCC. Please enlighten me if this is something that people do. The reverse happens a lot (people transferring from 2- to 4- year colleges). He originally said he had a bachelors from BCC and I was like “wait that’s a 2 year college.” He then told me that he’s in the registrar as someone who has a bachelors bc of his NYU credits. I asked him if he had student loans from NYU and he said he paid them off.
Anyway, please let me know what you think. Should I confront him? How do I confront him? How do I even find out if he’s lying, because I have no evidence other than my weird feelings about the whole thing?
TL; dR-sneaky link has told a variety of things about his educational background, job history, and financial history that don’t make sense now that I’m a grown 25 year old woman and not a stupid ass 20 year old. How do I check if he’s telling the truth? Should I? Should I confront him or not?
