5 missed strikes in a row leads to a grand slam. Weāll never know how this would have gone otherwise, but it 1,000% effected the game in a big way. WHY does anyone want human error in this game? Thereās no excuse for this. It cheapens the product of baseball
When I was a kid I questioned why they didnāt have robo umps. Now that I know more (and am more of a pitchers guy than batter) I could care less for robo umps.
Should umpire be held accountable and get graded and scorecards? Yes absolutely. Should you be able to challenge a call? Sure.
But if Iām a pitcher and Iāve been hitting spots and the corner for the first half of the game, I expect to earn those strikes on the black. Same as a patient hitter; if you can lay off those outside the zone consistently, then you should be able to earn those balls on the black.

Pitchers and batters have always been able to āwin overā the ump by showing great command or plate discipline. Why would the ump call a ball down and away on the edge (letās say 20% of the ball caught the plate/went through the strike zone) when the batter hasnāt been able to lay off pitches further off the plate? Especially if both the pitcher and batter have been consistent. Itās not that different from each umpire having a slightly different zone, or even tightening/opening their zone later in the game.
