So OTHER is obviously, from the other threads here, very important to a lot of people but it has no definition so there for, not really any help in making a decision on an island location.
SO
We need to eliminate OTHER.
There is a lot of information in the business plan under the Island Analysis that goes into many many countries and why they don't work. However, people still suggest these countries. So if a country has 50% taxes, requires $100,000 to start a business and requires up to $50,000 just to get a permanent residency visa, how is that even an option? So please consider the work that has gone into evaluating countries and what makes a country a viable candidate for immigration.
Having said that I want to open the floor for what OTHER is. There are minimum requirements for what island country we can even consider such as;
- Islands larger than 500 acres
- flexible immigration laws
- friendly business environment
- acceptance of foreign investment
- availability of resources ( water, food, vegetation, building material, etc)
- affordability ( less than $7,500 per acre)
- other minor concerns like healthcare, taxation, shipping, travel, etc.
With this list, many countries are ruled out. Like Panama. Its foreign investment friendly but business formation is a disaster and immigration is next to impossible unless you are retirement age. Cost is a big thing. Most islands in the Caribbean are WAY WAY too expensive. Thailand is way too expensive. Other countries just don't have islands any where close to 500 acres or larger like the Maldives, Kiribati, and Belize.
So there is a VERY limited choice... These are the only countries that have any remote possibility:
- Philippines
- New Caledonia
- French Polynesia
- Brazil
- Greece
- Bahamas are a stretch because of cost, but....
- Vietnam
So Please, take a moment and decide if one of these countries is what you mean by OTHER. Don't choose a different one. We will explain what the pros and cons are of the countries people seem to be choosing and then people can re-evaluate their answers.
There are roughly 20 - 30 answers on the survey related to OTHER so lets see those 20 - 30 responses.
