I've just stumbled upon this notion and it's fascinating. In short, it describes how primal urges can be reforged into valuable social traits. That means sexual, violent and similar tendencies channel and turn into their opposites as we mature.
A very to the point example is Johan Friedrich Dieffenbach - a legendary German surgeon that apparently used to cut tails of stray dogs as a child, but then pioneered facial reconstruction and skin transplantation.
On the great quest for self improvement, we all are, sublimation should take a pivotal role as a proven and frequent mechanism of self improvement. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it. Can it be put to use in mature individuals?
EDIT: I'm also wondering if it's an automatic subconscious process that "just happens" or if it can be rationally used by someone?
