Dualshock 1 not working in some games?

I was just wondering if I got the right idea regarding to this. I have two Dualshock 1 Controllers and one Dualshock 2. I can tell by the shape of the port, it looks very different when compared.
I tried games such as Def Jam Fight For NY and Gran Turismo 4, and tried playing 2 player mode. Turns out, it won't work.
I tried other games, like Tekken, Mortal Kombat, and it seem to work.
So is it true that some games just won't work with DS1?
