Just finished Black Mesa and it reignited my love for Half Life. What semi-modern AAA games in this FPS vein have come out since?
Post Body

Besides the obvious Half Life sequels of course, which I will definitely be revisiting.

It reminded me of how incredible Half Life was, and the forgotten relative merits of the genre which, in my opinion, include:

  • A lengthy, involved single-player campaign rather than a military throwaway
  • Completely linear but well-designed levels with a clear story
  • Non-regenerative health and armor pickups, manual save mechanics
  • Consistent introduction of varied weapons, mechanics, and enemies requiring different strategies
  • "Wow" moments
  • (Bonus for sci-fi environments. Love the research facility)

I desperately need more (alongside the sequels). What would you peg as spiritual successors or stand-alone FPS that meet at least some of the above? Some I thought of:

  • Metro series (loved 2033, loved Last Light, need to purchase Exodus)
  • From what I've heard, Wolfenstein (not sure which entries)
  • I'm guessing Doom (never played any entry)
  • Titanfall 2 specifically (short/regenerative/apparently still amazing)
  • Bioshock (Wildly different art style but some similar aspects)

Eternal is my favorite game, but it definitely won’t scratch the story element OP is looking for. If you’re looking for immensely satisfying and deep gameplay, Eternal is the pick, but if you want Half Life tier story beats then neither of the most recent Doom entries will satisfy that
