Post Body

Hello everyone! I thought I'd start my first post with a long short foreword:

My niece had become old enough to actually try to play a video game, and my sister asked me to find a suitable game for her to play. I was a bit limited a bit in my options, seeing that the game had to be free, drm free, and old enough to work on my sister's ancient pc.

So, of course, I looked at the two game discs I have - rayman 2 and Disney's Tarzan, both of which are games I remember very fondly from my childhood. I decided to go with the later, thinking a 2D game would be easier as a first one.

So far, though she's having trouble playing the game, she's having a lot of fun. So much so that it made me want to play it as well, relive my childhood and whatnot.

As a kid, I knew absolutely no word in english, so I never understood any of the tutorials in the game, and I played by my hunch. It was also over 15 years ago, so I barely have any clear memories of the it. I can only remember that I enjoyed it. As an adult, I expected to finally understand what I'm doing and enjoying the game to its fullest!

Aaaand... it's not nearly as fun as I remember it to be.

The game looks very nice for a game that was published during the PS1 era, but that's pretty much all of the positive I can say about it. The platforming is uninteresting, the enemies are ununique, and the level design and the collectables are just a slog (I think that's the correct term). That joy that I'm suppose to feel because of nostalgia lasted about 5 minutes, when I realised how barebones and basic the game really is.

Did this experience sully my overall memory of the game? Somewhat. I'll still remember this game for the joy it brought me as a kid, but also for the bore that it is. But, at the same time, seeing how much my niece is having with the game... I guess it's not so bad.

So, did any of you have any chance to replay a game from your childhood? How did it turn out? Was it as fun as you remembered it to be, or were you disappointed, like I was?
