Landlord tenant question?
Post Body

Hi, I am wondering if anyone could give me a quick little bit of advice. I have looked on google and I can't figure out what to do. I rented my first apartment and signed a 1 year lease about 2 months ago. The apartment was supposed to be ready July 1. It was being advertised as newly renovated with photos of the landlords other properties. He said the unit would be very similar. I viewed the apartment two months ago and he showed me all the repairs he would be doing. New flooring, doors, ceiling. Basically the entire place would be redone and was going to take two months I gave him first and last months rent.

I went to pick up the key on July 1 and the apartment had no repairs done. The ceiling tiles had fallen out, a huge water leak was in the apartment from the ceiling. The bathtub was unusable, windows couldn't open, broken glass, mold in cupboard etc... It was in worse condition than when I viewed it months ago!

I requested my money back and to terminate the lease and wrote him an email explaining why, and pictures. He said he would give me my money back on the phone July 1. I have since emailed and called requesting it and I haven't heard back.

This is my first apartment and I am not sure what my options are? I had to put all my belongings in storage and am staying in a hotel but this will get expensive real soon. Does anyone have any advice or know where I could find out some info?
