I am white and live in the US where there is a pretty large population of immigrants from India. At a thrift store I bought a silk sari wrap styled skirt but now that I have it, I am nervous to actually wear it. Is it cultural appropriation? I’m not wearing it as a costume just as a regular item of clothing. I tried to google it but didn’t find an answer. I could ask my coworker, but I’m embarrassed that the answer is really obvious in either direction. 😭wwhat if she’s like “ obviously!” Or she says “that isn’t even authentic I can’t believe you think I can give you permission.” Idk. I’d rather ask an Indian stranger online. I’ve included a picture of a similar skirt I found online.
I think appreciation is not a bad thing! I'm kind of torn because thrifting is ethical, but also when buying clothes from another culture I think its important to directly support sewers/designers 😅 but it's not appropriation if you understand where it came from and celebrate that!
Eta: Oops I missed that OP was asking for input from Indian folk, which I am not!
