So Iām doing my clinical rotations on my final semester in the medical surgical unit when the call comes out for a combative patient in the Er, the charge nurse grabs me and my classmate and tells us to go with her, we rush to the ER and are told to flout on gloves and just build a wall, we get to the ER and find a schizophrenic male PT in his undies with blood splattered all over the floor around him, he ripped off the IV and cut himself somehow, there is blood everywhere and he is sizing all of us up and saying he is going to kill us. I made my way to the other side and attempt to deescalate the situation, leads no where, he then attempts to go into the room with another patient at which point I have to put hands on him to prevent harm to that patient and push him way from the door, he seems to calm down a little and then starts off again on wanting to kill everyone, the ER doctor finally got tired of it and physically subdued him at which point we all held him down and a dose of Lorazepam was administered, it did nothing, the police arrived soon after and he was handcuffed, the officer got tired of trying to get him to stand and dragged him out to his patrol car where he requested assistance placing him in the unit. After about 15 minutes in the back of the unit, he calmed down, we got him out and placed him on a bed and rolled him back into the ER. Another dose was administered, the PoLice officer handcuffed him to the side rails and remained in the room with him, the patient fell asleep thereafter. All in all it was an interesting rotation.
