Advice on dealing with personal issues and working
Post Body

Long story short, Iā€™m heart broken. I called out of work once after not eating or sleeping for 2 days and I was treated like shit bc of it. Itā€™s killing me to not cry less than half time Iā€™m at work. My empathy is low. A few pts have realized something was wrong but like itā€™s not fair to them for me to just mentally not be there. Iā€™m a traveler and the one day I called our ever, they sent my company a message saying it was unacceptable to call out for ā€œpersonal reasons.ā€ I canā€™t just quit bc I need the money but fuck Iā€™m hurting and I just want to be home.

Any general family practice provider can fill out the paperwork. When I had to do FMLA when I was depressed I just went to my regular family doc and explained that my current job was to the point where I needed the time off but couldnā€™t lose the job until I had found something else and said that my depression was like a billion times worse when I was there and they filled out the paperwork right then and there and asked me if I wanted a lump sum of time off or if I would need to periodically miss work and need to be protected. I chose the latter

Right to work is not the same as At-will employment just as a heads up. Youā€™re describing at-will employment meaning either party can terminate employment without cause or reason. However, you may look into FMLA. If you can get a doctor to fill out the paperwork for a medical condition (even depression for example based on what youā€™re describing) you become legally protected to use unpaid leave as needed either scattered throughout the year or in a chunk and itā€™s a specific number of days per year that is significant. It also makes it harder for them to terminate your employment at all because of fear of being sued for retaliation. Something to look into.
