Yes and no. I agree using that as a measuring stick is probably not a good idea but with a certain level of maturity it shouldn't be hard to understand when it's appropriate to bend a little in favor of protecting other people.
In the case of masks, I'll be the first to agree that the messaging was confusing, inconsistent, and the actions of elected leaders left a lot to be desired. That said, the underlying science made sense and masks don't represent a threat to most people's health and safety.
I worked in healthcare all through the pandemic and I had to wear a mask for 12-14 hours straight to the point where I had blisters on my face from the masks. I hate them...but I wore them because people were depending on me to help keep them safe and part of that was wearing a mask during a public health emergency.
