Hello, fellow brawlers. One day late but I was taking advantage of the event to record a bunch of stuff lmao.
This week the deck is a Orcus toolbox and is the second one from a serie of 7 Brawl commander I'm going to record. Play testing (In spanish) here and the decklist is here and I don't know if it's necesary to say it but these decks aren't rotation proof, I simply can't cut 4 sets that are going to still around for some weeks.
I don't know if there's someone who doesn't know what's a "toolbox" deck but are those type of decks with a bunch of utility creatures and/or spells that help to find answers (You're looking for the answer in your "toolbox"). I think that a good example of this kind of decks was a very popular Toolbox deck with [[Militia Bugler]] in the 2019 Standard (I think, I can't remember).
My first approach to the deck was a reanimator with our commander so we have a bunch of rocks like [[Arcane signet]], [[Letter of acceptance]], [[Skyclave relic]] and [[Replicating ring]] to help pay the initial 4 mana the X's for value. As I was testing I realize that, indeed, the deck work but not as the massive reanimator deck that I expected if not actually like a "Toolbox" one.
How the main approach was reanimate the deck only have creatures that have ETB effects so we have things like [[Gelatinous cube]], [[Red dragon]], [[Callous bloodmage]], [[Demon's disciple]], etc... Big shoutout to my man Machine Gun of the peaks that can finish the game if we can reanimate some creatures with Orcus or [[Agadeem's awakening]], also to [[Baleful beholder]] that can give us that huge menace.
For the non creature spells we are playing a type of "mono removal" strategy to keep the way clear to our winnie dudes until we can drop a "bomb". Cards like [[eliminate]], [[frost bire]], [[feed the swarm]], [[heated debate]], [[Spikefield hazard]] [[Jarl of the forsaken]], etc... Some of this removals can hit other things besides creatures so you have answers to multiple things
Like those creatureless control decks that have a companion just to have a thing to put the preassure on, this deck can work perfectly without our commander, making him just an utility card that is available for when we need him, for 1. As a reanimator card that can bring us some value such as a removal with [[Gelatinous cube]] / [[Demon's disciple]], (also the fact that it gives those creatures haste is sweet) or 2. A board wipe. I know that, for example, 6 mana for -2/-2 don't look like a great deal but you have to see it as a board wipe that is there for you when you need and I would say that's kinda priceless, just remember those times when you got your ass kicked by a bunch of 1/1 or 2/2 tokens or when the oppoent have 2 or 3 creatures that would give him so much value and you just have removal for one.
I know that the decklist don't look too op but I'm sure that a bunch of people didn't expect that [[Terror of the peaks]] [[Agadeem's awakening]] = Nuke your face in one turn, or the [[Orcus, prince of undeath]] into [[Baleful beholder]] = A bunch of creatures with menace that you can't block.
I think that some cuts could be [[Archfiend's vessel]], this dude was on vacations all play testing lol, I don't remember using it in any game but hey, if he can make a time for you in his schedule I'm sure that reanimate trigger is going to pay off. [[Kroxa, titans of death's hunger]] I think that I don't have to explain the big non-bo that is a creature that you have to play with Escape in a "semi-reanimator" deck, don't get me wrong, dude did some huge work in some games but if you can replace him maybe is not a bad idea. [[Acererak the archlich]], being honest I actually did some dungeons in some games but that was because I had the control of the board and could afford to tap out some turns to venture multiple times, I honestly think that we can find better things to do for 3 mana. Maybe [[Ebondeath, dracolich]], the main idea of having him was the fact that as we are playing hard on removal we could "recicle" him from our graveyard but actually I didn't did it in any match up (As far as I can remember).
Also I want to say that I thought naming the deck "One bullet Orcus" because in the first stages of the play testing, for his initial cost and the fact that we have to pay an aditional X's to get value, I thought that we would only play him once per game, as a reanimator or a board wipe but nope, how we are a type of "weird control" deck the games some times the games are going to be long enough to play Orcus more than one time and even if we can only return 1 creature normally is going to be enough to do some work, so... Orcus toolbox, return what you need (As I said, Beholder menace, disciple removal, etc...).
Hope you enjoy the deck or that can help you as a idea generator. See you next week fellow brawlers.
