I think a number of folks from the region can fondly remember the Highland Games that used to be held annually at Blount Park. Long term I would love to see something like that return.
To that end, I would love to see some sort of group be formed to promote and build Irish/Scottish/Celtic culture in the region. Not one to sit around and wait for that to happen, but also knowing I don't have the time nor inclination to run such an organization long term (the Howlers are enough thank you), I would like to get the ball rolling in some small ways, and see if something doesn't take off.
So the Howlers are going to try to organize a Celtic festival at some point within a year or so. If you have any interest in being involved, I would love to hear it. If you have any resources that could be drawn upon (you know a bagpiper/you went to school with a guy who now sells kilts for a living/your mom teaches Irish dance/whatever) I would especially love to hear that. I don't want to just bring down a bunch of bands/orgs/vendors from Birmingham/Atlanta/etc, I want to be able to showcase some local talent as well.
What I am currently aware of:
- There is a SCA group(s?) in the area.
- The Flanks have played at Hilltop Public House (and I am friends with them).
- The River Region Scottish Society (haven't talked to them yet, because I am impulsive and wanted to post this first).
