I'm a first year student in Australia studying Engineering and Computer Science. I'm really interested in doing a major in Mining. I've heard it's a really good paying job here in Australia.
So just give me your honest opinion, is it worth it doing a mining degree in Australia or should I consider something else ?
Nah did them separately. Did the survey one then computer science. The USQ let me combine some mining engineering and GIS programming subjects into the degree.
So I've knocked out a surveying and computer science degree. What's become a real growth industry is the application of AI in mining and mechanical engineering to improve dig rates, planning and reliability of machines. I would highly recommend going down that path. There are plenty of emerging solutions which use this technology.

Most mining and GIS packages have python libraries now which allows for a lot of automation. There's plenty of opportunities to improve how things are done, unfortunately just not a lot of skilled people in the industry.
