How is therapy supposed to work?

I feel like I have just enough time to tell her something about myself, or what's been going on, and then the hour is over. Then, wait two weeks.
Even if it were twice as often, this doesn't seem like nearly enough time to talk about anything, let alone work on anything.
What am I even supposed to be getting out of this? Why does everyone push this like it's a solution to mental health problems?
