Seems like a retconned explanation.
The vast majority of comic book characters in the same genre at the time wore outrageously flamboyant costumes. Wolverine wasn't anything standout.
If anything, it was sometimes the opposite. In some of the early comics, Wolverine had a largely brown and yellow palette which was more muted than the other superheroes.
You are making my point for me.
They said popularity wise, Spiderman is king. Therefore recognizability would naturally follow.
If they said Spiderman is the most recognizable, but not the most popular, then your statement would be valid.
Popularity and recognizability are functionally the same word when used in this way.
Is there any evidence whatsoever to back that up? It's not like Spiderman is some new character.

If Spiderman dominants the popularity and merchandising charts, I see no reason why he wouldn't be more recognizable.
