Marvel v Ultimate?

Relatively new to comics and just kinda realized there’s at least two universes in Marvel comics? What is the difference? Why have an Ultimate branch and when did it start? For someone who loves Miles Morales, who is, I think in both Ultimate comics and not, is there a best way to read him? Either in Ultimate or not? Also I could not be asking the right questions, as I’m not 100% what Ultimate comics are.
