I'm working on a Summoning Type Magic System.
I only came up with three so far and was wondering what other kinds I could include. Or if the ones I already have should be modified in some way. Please leave your thoughts.
Thank you, now let's begin.
A Summoner is a type of mage who can establish a connection with a higher dimension. Therefore allowing them to communicate with higher-dimensional spiritual beings. The beings living in each dimension have different properties and existences. But they generally share a common trait in how they are metaphysical lifeforms. To appear on earth, the Summoner must pay a cost of mana and continue to sustain a physical avatar for them to inhabit. But since they are technically nonphysical, these avatars can theoretically be given a variety of shapes and forms even for the same summoned. But the form is typically set on what's convenient, familiar, or comfortable with the spiritual being. Thanks to this property, even if a summoned being's avatar is destroyed, they can always be repaired and resummoned.
The known realms a summoner can contact include:
Astral Realm: The Spirits of the Astral Realm are the most diverse and similar to that of fairies. With very little attachment to a physical form and can exist as anything or possess any attribute. The ones that do find a favored shape/element will evolve into a higher spirit once they settle into that familiar form. As they age and develop their sentience, they grow more powerful as their egos create a more resolute image on what they self-actualize into. The ruler of the Astral Realm is the Spirit King who was once a contracted spirit to a young boy who eventually rose to become the king of a great kingdom. The impression of the king gave the spirit such a strong imputes that it remains a signifying mental image for the spirit for eternity. When an unformed spirit establishes a contract, they'll take the form of something with a deep subconscious impression of the contractor.
At their peak, a contractor and spirit unite into a single being in both mind and body. This requires them to have an extremely intuned conscious and subconscious. Not that they need to love each other, but that their mentalities are so close that they can literally be a single person. Which is why it's generally more favored to contract a new spirit with a moldable ego rather than a powerful spirit with its own identity cemented.
Demon Realm: The Demons that reside in the Demon realm are generally more brutal in nature than all other spiritual beings. But at the same time, they are the most battle friendly who have no qualms about settling all issues with bloodshed. Which is why the shapes they usually develop into are extremely combat oriented as a survival necessity. Only demon's who have changed and modified themselves through countless bouts will survive in the literal hell they exist in. The most powerful of demons are the ones who continue to live in the most chaotic of regions and have the intelligence to contemplate and review all their previous fights with a pure-hearted goal of always striving to improve themselves over the course of millennia. Changing and developing themselves through the law of nature. This is also one of the reasons they may form a contract with a Summoner. So they can learn the methods of survival and fighting from the perspective of weaker beings.
The Summoning of a Demon is different than other Spiritual Beings. That is because the demon is not summoned outside the summoner but inside of them. Summoning a Demon means allowing the Demon to possess the Contractor. This grants them the properties of the Demon body which had been formed from countless battles. The more powerful the contractor, the more of the Demon's image they'll be able to obtain. The peak of Demon Summoning is full possession where the Summoner's initial form is almost completely replaced by the Demon they summoned.
Note that the Demon itself does not control the Summoner. It only gives aspects of its body to them. The Demon then observes how the Summoner uses its body and finds ways to improve. Every Demon Summoner should be aware that even if they summon the same Demon, they could have a drastically different body. Such as losing wings or obtaining claws and such.
Amendment: Demon's were originally battle-hardened warriors but limited their tactics to how to fight in frontal brawls. But thanks to learning from their human contractors, they started using all sorts of tactics from poison to ambushes.
Primal Realm: The Primal Beasts of the Primal Realm are arguably the most powerful among Spiritual Beings. Most were born from the primal essence of the universe giving them strange characteristics. Including being born in a fully grown adult form and will remain unchanging and unaging for eternity. No two Primal Beasts are similar, to say the least as they can have a myriad of forms with the only shared characteristic being their existence of Apex Predators in any other realm. This might also be why they rarely fight amongst each other because any fight between these beings would result in a disaster rippling across the universe. Because of their method of creation, there are much fewer Primal Beasts than any other Spiritual Being. That said, they are usually born with intelligence and ability beyond what any other being would have. Rather than saying a Summoner forms a contract with a Primal Beast to summon them into their world, the most Summoners can do is borrow a sliver of their powers.
In the summoning of a Primal Beast, the Summoners must open a dimensional pathway to allow a part of the Primal Beast's existence to pass through and then use their own mana to supply it with the power necessary to construct its body. The bigger and more established the dimensional pathway is, the more of the Primal Beast's existence will be able to pass through, resulting in a summoned avatar that's closer to the source. When summoning a Primal Beasts, its form and power changes depending on the amount of Existence drawn. The most notable difference is, ironically, its age of appearance. When summoning a very small portion of its existence, the Primal Beast summoned could have the appearance of that beast's theoretical infant form. The greater amount of the Beasts existence that is drawn, the older and more developed the primal beast will become.
Due to how they are summoned, unless someone could summon an entire Primal Beast, multiple summoners can always draw a bit of the Primal Beast's existence and summon multiple copies of itself at once.
In theory, at its peak, a summoner would summon the fully grown adult body of Primal Beast in its completed form. Note that such an event has been theorized to mark the destruction of a material world.
