Hey all, need some advice here.
My 2019 16” machine is about to hit 3 years next month and finishes with its AppleCare plan. In the last two years I’ve had two logic board failures (and free replacements thanks to AC), and I don’t have much confidence in this machine lasting for long. Instead of it dying later and having to shell out $$$ to to repair it, I’m currently looking to trade it in for a M1 Pro machine. This is where I’m confused and would appreciate some advice.
Size: I’ve never been comfortable with the 16” form factor (coming from a 13” retina). It’s not a laptop but rather a desk machine. So I am highly considering the 14”. I do use my machine for work (video editing and more in Resolve, some amount of After Effects, a bit of creative coding and occasionally dabble in Unity) - but at home I’m always docked to a 1440p monitor external keyboard etc so I don’t see it affecting my day to day life much. The added portability when I AM on the road though (not often, but does happen) will be much appreciated. However, I’ve seen some reports of the 14” thermal throttling - I don’t care about synthetic benchmarks, anyone using this day to day and having issues?
Price/Options: So the three options I’m considering (the only ones available in store, cannot do custom configs off Apple coz trade in is not an option through it where I live) are - 14” base model (8 14), 14” upper model (10 16) and 16” base model (10 16). Now, money is a little tight this month so I AM WONDERING what’re the cons of the 14” base model. I’m fairly certain it’ll outclass my current 16” in all regards anyway but how much real world performance (and future proofiing) am I leaving on the table if I get the base model versus the higher end models?
Help please?
