As others have said, it's not an appearance issue. I think especially if you are pursuing women in their early to mid 20s, you will probably have to be the one doing the approaching/engaging. It can feel awkward or uncomfortable but the worst they can say is they aren't interested. Getting rejected sucks but it has happened to all of us and not a big deal!
