Hello, I am trying to cancel my teachers union membership, and the union is telling me that it is not allowed. They are saying that there is a month June-July each year that I have to drop, outside of that, I automatically sign up for the entire next year.
Is this legal? During a quick Google, it seems like they cannot do this.
The entire email is below, if I am missing context.
UNION Cannot process you drop request because it is not a valid drop request. You signed up for UNION membership on 8/10/2022. To drop membership, you must submit a valid drop request between Jun 10 - Jul 10 of any given year.
We encourage you to maintain your membership. Our effectiveness in bargaining fair and just salaries, benefits, and working conditions is directly related to member support and the power we have in our collective voice. Increasing funding to public schools, reducing class sizes, improving school safety, and ensuring that professional rights such as due process and permanent status are protected are direct results of the important work we have been able to accomplish because of a united CTA membership.
