Myself (23), brother (18) and parents (50 and 51) have been living in my grandmother’s (72) house for the last 2 years.
We sold our trailer in 2022, moved in here to avoid paying crazy Canadian house prices and 6% mortgage rates, we have stayed here longer than expected due to the housing market as a middle to lower class family recovering from bankruptcy.
Recently my grandmother has gotten very irritable about the dogs barking at outside noise, the hair from the dogs, not being able to bring anyone over because they’ll bark (her words), the amount of laundry, the chores around the house and who does and doesn’t do them, she feels like she doesn’t have any right to her own house, etc.
We are desperately looking for somewhere else to go but in rural eastern Canada things are a little crazy. We are completely out of options other than bidding on every house that comes along wether we want it or not, trying to rent anything that comes up, or staying here and walking on egg shells.
Since we started living here we have paid all the bills that increased because of us in the full amount (heating, electricity, water), put a brand new front and back step on the house as they were rotted and falling apart, do all snow removable and lawn care, replaced the washing machine, completely did over 2 rooms that were unliveable, and we have paid for grocery’s every week not including whatever whatever Grandmother picks up on her own time, She eats for free every night, we run every errand she’s ever asked, and we recently helped her sister (my great aunt) move back home and get her all sorted out.
I’m very sure my grandmother is a narcissist, she always has to say something and have the last word, it’s always everyone else’s fault, she can never take any accountability for her own actions. She has nobody in her life but us because she’s pissed everyone else off enough for them to leave her. If it weren’t for us moving in she wouldn’t even be living in a nice house like this because she would have ran out of money. I guess I’m bitter because after all that we have done for her she still is threatening to kick us out and kill our dogs :(
I guess my question is - if my grandmother woke up one day and decided to call the cops to kick us out, do we have any rights here as we’ve been here for 2 years, pay bills and have nowhere else to go? Does the situation change if she was to be diagnosed with a mental disorder? Any and all advice is appreciated :)
Will reply as I can :)
