How would I go about creating this simple API call?

Basically, I had an idea to make a funny little script that would take in a phrase and replace each word with the longest synonym for it in a thesaurus (using something like http://words.bighugelabs.com/api.php)
I feel like this should be quite simple, and could even just be a shell script, but I'm really not sure where to start.
