Trying to choose which school to join
Post Body

I am a newbie to bjj, and have narrowed down my search to 2 schools here in my city. I have done a trial class at both but like both of them for different reasons so wanted to come ask for some advice.

I'll be referring to them as Gym 1 and Gym 2 going forward.

Both gyms have main instructors with good lineage, clean facilities, are well reviewed, and seem to have a lot of respect for jiu jitsu.

The approaches to the classes seem different though.

Gym 1 is a BJJ and Muai Thai school. The beginners package allows me to take 2 beginners classes and 1 muai Thai class per week. It taught by a legit black belt who can be found on BJJ Heroes, and is well decorated. However the beginner class is taught by someone else (another black belt though). The class structure is overall better to me, as it starts off with self defense techniques, then into drills, and they have a defined curriculum for beginners to ease into things. It seems more focused and straightforward. Note: this Gym doesn't really have the beginners roll from the start. Instead we have defined goals to reach for a specific drill (such as: start in this position and get to side control. The other guy has to stop you. Then switch.) This school tests for belt promotion.

Gym 2 has bit of a smaller feel to it. The main instructor is also a legit black belt and is known for bringing BJJ the first few BJJ black belts to my city to start teaching. Of course the beginner class is taught by someone else though (another black belt). The class structure here seems more freeflow compared to the defined feel from gym 1. I enjoy the vibe from the class and instructor more. I also feel like the instructor was more helpful to teaching the class than at Gym 1, this might be because Gym 2 has smaller class sizes than Gym 1 from the few days I checked them both out. I prefer the instructor here but am uncertain if I'll learn the fundamentals as quickly as Gym 1 since it is not as defined of a curriculum. This Gym also has us rolling from day 1 which I believe is beneficial compared to Gym 1 in some ways. However there are no tests for belt promotion, idk if this is a good thing or not. They just get a feel for where your at to move you up.

Since I'm completely new to this, can anyone give me some advice?

TL:DR -

Gym 1 breakdown: Better Class Structure, More defined curriculum, includes self defense techniques to start classes, includes muai Thai in package, tests for belt promotion, 2 days bjj and 1 day Muai Thai per week, no rolling for a while at first, drills are more intense.

Gym 2 breakdown: Better instructor for the beginner class, more freeflow curriculum but still taught fundamentals, bjj 3 days a week, does not test for belts, smaller class size for more 1 on 1 teaching.
