I’m at 6 weeks, splint removed and cleared to eat whatever, however I can’t really because I’ve got pretty decent sized open bites at my molars.
So I’m very gratefully experiencing what it’s like to rip something apart cleanly with my front teeth for once, but pretty helpless after that! I have to take pieces big enough to mush even if I can’t get full contact, but not too small I never chew at all. Then just go for it and swallow semi-chewed.
Doc says it was intentional and I’ve started working with my ortho on bands. I hesitated to post cause well it is what it is, but this is def one of the more surprising parts after having done all the tough work.
Anyone else’s teeth land this way and were subsequently brought together?
I have this issue! anterior open bite due to tongue thrust, allergies/mouth breathing closed in surgery, and now 7 months post op I still have a posterior open bite, and chewing anything substantial is very difficult. This was a planned result of the surgery and I was also told it would be resolved with ortho. However, my orthodontist has told me if he puts bands directly on those molars that don't touch, we risk reopening the anterior open bite... so I'm essentially just still in braces waiting for spontaneous supraeruption, which is the effect that naturally occurs where your teeth emerge to meet each other in response to a sudden gap. I'm extremely tired and frustrated, but it doesn't seem like anything further can be done other than waiting. Just try and communicate and buckle in. Congrats on being throuhg the hard part, and enjoy those soft foods without the splint! Focus on the good.

Sort of... He repositioned brackets in the front and added a third runner band to my daily wear, and that brought them a bit closer together. Ultimately he said he would leave it with "some" space and let them come together over time on their own. After two years, I needed to move cities and I was so sick of having braces, we got to a place that was good enough and took them off. My back molars don't touch, but I don't feel impeded trying to chew anything. It remains to be seen if they'll ever touch.
