I know it’s early — I’m about 60% of the way through — but something about this book isn’t entirely clicking with me. I’m assuming it all comes together in the end, to serve some purpose, but all these dreams and flashbacks and everything that’s happening...so much of it just feels extraneous, or like stuff is being thrown at the wall hoping something sticks. It’s an easy enough read, but I dunno, it just feels hollow.
I also feel like I’m never getting a good sense of the space. The description of the station is lacking to a degree where I can’t ever picture what the place looks like, or how it’s laid out — I keep trying to picture stuff like The Abyss or Sphere or even Alien just so I can try and create the scenes in my mind, but it’s a struggle.
There are interesting ideas, but overall I feel like I’m more finishing the book just to finish it, and less because it’s actually engaging me. Unless something really mind-blowing happens this is shaping up to be a rather “meh” read.
Edit: (semi spoilers) Just finished it a little bit ago and it really didn’t improve. I thought there’d be some grand explanation as to why everything was happening, and there kinda was, but it was basically just “because”. Half the book is made up of “is this really happening?” scenes, and so much of it doesn’t feel like it plays out in any meaningful ways. This is one of the few books I can think of in a long time that I’d have a hard time recommending in almost any regard — it kinda failed across the board.
