I’m looking for any works of horror fiction which meet some very specific criteria. I’m looking for short fiction, short story to novella length, which is inspired by and/or reminiscent of the works of Edgar Allan Poe, and Lovecraft to a lesser extent. I’ll take older works, but I’m looking for something more modern, yet still retains the restrained, lyrical, and poetic voice of those classics. A first person narrative voice is also a must. The closest I have ever come to finding something like this is when I discovered Teatro Grottesco by Thomas Ligotti. I consider this work to be the finest collection of horror fiction I have ever read. Another work which I feel captured what I am looking for is the short story by Michael Chabon called The God of Dark Laughter. I’m looking for something similar to these works, but also something original. I have read through too many overly derivative works inspired by Lovecraft and Ligotti. I’m looking for something which is inspired by these works, yet presents its own unique vision. Sorry if this comes across as a bit of a messy ramble but I’m desperate. It’s been far too long since I’ve read something that I loved the way I love these stories and writers. I’m getting burned out on disappointing reads. Please help!
