I want to get my grandmother an easy-to-use device that she can use for e-mail and light web browsing. I have a personal bias against Apple, but the iPad seems ideal for this. Any objections and/or suggestions for alternatives?
Here are the requirements I've thought of along with how the iPad fills them:
- The device needs to support a Cyrillic/Russian keyboard layout in an easy-to-use way. I'm going to check this, but if it's like the iPhone in this respect, it works.
- I would like to set her up with a cheap broadband data plan instead of going through the hassle of setting her up with Internet access. I think that iPad's $15 250MB plan would be more than enough for her purposes.
- It needs to be bulletproof. She has used computers before, but still has the occasional "oh no I clicked something and ruined everything" moment. I think that I can tell her to just press the Home button if she is stuck or confused. I'm OK with the occasional tech support call, but I don't want her to constantly run into issues.
My main concern with the iPad is that she doesn't have a computer, so I'll have to take care of any OS updates, catastrophic crash recovery, etc. Based on my iPhone experience, this shouldn't happen too often.
With the 16GB 3G iPad, I'm looking at $629 $15-25/mo, so that is the general price range I'm looking at. I am a fan of this being contract-free.
Any other thoughts? I'm sure I'm not the first one, so I'd love to hear how others have done this.
Edit: Bullet points and minor edits.
Update: Went and played with iPad. It is far from ideal for someone who is new to computers, but seems usable.
My main complaints are the small fonts that cannot be adjusted and that a lot of frequently-used buttons are unlabeled. I can see it taking a while getting used to the "Compose Mail" button being a tiny indiscernible thing hidden away in the corner. I was hoping that Gmail's interface would be better, but it is exactly the same.
On the plus side, language support is excellent, and I can even change the OS language to be mostly Russian. For reasons I don't understand, some icons and buttons retain their English labels. I can maybe understand this for Safari, but why isn't "Mail" translated? Is Mail now a proper noun?
Overall, I'm somewhat disappointed, but still think it's a workable solution with a relatively big, readable screen and more-or-less usable interface. I have yet to find any alternatives. I think a netbook could work, but I haven't seen any manufacturers offering to dual-label the keyboard, and I'm not going to spend my time affixing stickers to each individual key, sorry.
The HP/Palm webOS tablet mentioned below is a first-generation product at best, vaporware at worst. Since it's not even been announced yet, I have no idea when it will be released, how much it will cost, and whether it will support cell broadband.
The Archos has a tiny screen, no cell broadband support, and I can't even find any web browser screenshots or videos other than the Google homepage. Do they sell these at stores? Where can I play around with one?
