I’ve researched online and most of the blogs and listicles I’ve found feel like they’re sponsored so it’s hard to tell when I’m getting unbiased info. Also, they usually just tell you what to look for when buying a chisel, but I’d like to get some specifics on brands if possible. I saw Paul Sellers endorsing the Aldi chisels but I haven’t found them in my area or on eBay.
Do you guys have any recommendations on some chisels that can keep my costs low? They don’t need to last my whole life, but it’d be nice to know they’ll work well for a few years if maintained properly.
Buy the cheapest tools you can, including sharpening stones (200/1k/strop and red or green compound). Focus on your sharpening skills untill you can get a perfect edge every time.
Cheap tools actually are a gift to learn how to sharpen, they're main issue being poorer edge retention... I'm honnestly advising anyone to buy the cheapest stuff they can and learn to take the best they can out of it. And OTOH I've seen some pretty damaged expensive tools in the hands of people who hadn't developed the skills to use and maintain those.
