Halo Infinite Jumping and Grappling Hook

What's the deal with the grappling hook? I am brand new to Halo and playing Infinite. I'm on the first mission and stuck with the exploding ship and trying to get out but there is a huge empty space and I have fallen down a few levels. I can't see where the grappling hook will attach to or what I can jump on so it is just grapple, fall fall grapple now I am on something try again, die, get frustrated.
