I’ve seen several videos on tiktok where young people argue that you should never collect rocks from outside, especially in touristy places because it ruins the ecosystem.
I honestly don’t get it, how picking rocks from random places on Earth can ruin that place’s ecosystem? Even if a thousand people pick rocks from Grand Canyon, still there are plenty of rocks, isn’t it? Asking the real geologists here
Many natural tourist spots are protected areas. It's generally bad form and illegal to collect anything from protected areas without permission.
Not all tourists spots are massive too. One person picking up a rock won't affect it. A hundred people doing the same, every day, for 200 years and you'll start to see changes. It'll also set a bad precedent, one guy picks up a rock, another might be tempted to hammer one off and leave ugly marks or even destabilise some features. Next thing you know the entire Petrified Forest National Park will have been pocketed away by tourists
