Australia's first hydrogen exploration well has confirmed the presence of hydrogen underground, detecting 73% H2 in mud-gas samples and some helium.

They think the H2 could be sourced from radiolysis of water and serpentinisation in deeper basement rocks, with the fractures as a migration pathway.
The hydrogen system is not understood yet, and I believe this target was chosen only because of the old well log.

The H2 was detected by the good ol' mudlogging suite, the helium was from wireline downhole fluid samples.
Most of the current H2 encounters are coincidental. There's a possibility we could be missing more H2 finds because companies don't don't usually get H2 detection in mudlogging or post-drill studies.
