Any Unity Dev's out there that can lead me in the right direction

Hello. Recently I've started to ponder switching from GameMaker to Unity but I'm not sure really where to begin with Unity. I know you can make 2d stuff in it, and I've been wanting to make a 2d side-scrolling "shooter" in a sense, but I'm not really sure where to begin.
