Was anyone else terrified to remove their dressings?

I’m nearing 24 hours post op & really the only pain I’m having is in & above my belly button. It’s probably my fault because I was feeling good earlier and didn’t take my pain medicine when it was time. It hurts so bad to stand up. Anyway, with that being said… they told me I could remove my dressings after 24 hours but I’m terrified to remove the one from my belly button. I’m not sure why. I think I’m afraid that since it hurts so bad, it’s gonna look terrible or be worse without the bandage.
